If you’re a DIYer you’ve probably experienced a few renovation fails of your own. From skimping on the prep work, your own safety or falling short of a realistic budget.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before you start your next renovation project:

  1. Don’t buy cheap materials
  2. Measure twice, cut once (my husband’s mantra)
  3. Don’t skimp on the prep work (do it the right way the first time and it saves time later)
  4. Failing to plan is planning to fail, (my mom always said) have a plan for your project.
  5. Duct Tape does NOT fix everything (use the right tool for the job)
  6. Safety FIRST!

Safety should have been #1, I drill it into my son.

Why? Well once upon a time my husband and I did property maintenance. One job I was handling on my own was installing a rain channel above a screen door, when I arrived I realized I didn’t have a ladder (I’m only 5’4″ so I am not sure why I didn’t think I needed one), maybe it was because I had two buckets!  A round bucket and a square bucket… you guessed it! Perfect for stacking to reach my goal. So with drill and rain channel in hand, I gingerly placed my foot onto the top bucket while I held onto the door jamb.

All was going well until I reached for said drill between my legs, causing the buckets to buckle sending my feet above my head and my head onto the concrete step leading to the rain channel-less door…

After I awoke from my brief brush with incapacitation, I looked around to see who had witnessed my idiocy, gathered my tools and went home.

Needless to say, safety first.
